Making paper hens at Cork Culture Night.

Culture Night is coming up shortly (19th September) and it is always a fixture on the calendar in our house. We have been going to the Cork events for a number of years (our youngest was only 6 weeks old at his very first one), and we still love the buzz and excitement around the city on the evening. Culture Night takes place in cities and towns all over Ireland, so chances are there is something happening in your area. There are usually lots of family friendly events - if children are not welcome it is usually noted. Cultural venues will have extended opening hours for the night and best of all - the events are free!

The evening is a great opportunity for children to experience cultural events they may not normally have access to - for example our daughter was only 3 years old when she watched a short opera performance. Children (and adults) can also try out new activities - last year our two children loved a circus skills event.

I usually try to download or print off the brochure for Cork Culture Night. I then mark out an itinerary for the evening, as there is so much in the Cork city schedule of events. This allows us to prioritise what we definitely want to see, what events we might squeeze in if time allows, and which events need to be pre-booked. A lot of walking may be involved on the night so a buggy comes in very handy, even if the kids are bigger and don’t usually need one anymore. It’s also good to pack lots of snacks and nibbles as these will keep everyone going as the night progresses. If you do get to go along this year, do share your experiences with us. Most of all, ENJOY!
