I can hardly believe it will be 11 weeks this Friday since our dd2 joined us. My first dd was born just short of 37 weeks. I was induced due to IUGR & oligohydramnios. She was perfect. This time round was much different. I had lots of back pain & pressure with this pregnancy. I knew I was in for a much bigger baby! The evening of 8th October we took our dd out on her trike. She insisted we ran & had races & it seemed to do the trick because not long after she was in bed the back pain I had been experiencing intensified & I knew that this was the start. I checked by bags & went to bed listening to my tracks at 8.20 feeling very relaxed. I woke at midnight with lower back pain radiating to my front & slight nausea. I got a heat pack & lay with it on my back. I decided to download an app to record contractions-this was a very new experience & I wanted to be sure! My contractions were 9-10mins apart lasting 1min. I snoozed in between contractions. They started to intensify by 4.30am & my dh helped with each contraction by applying counter pressure. This was great.
At about 6am I had a lovely shower. Dh made breakfast which I tried to eat but couldn't. We packed up the car & our lovely dd & dropped her to our childminder. I'm sure dh hit every lump & bump en route to the hospital! I felt the contractions stopped & I was sure I'd be sent home. We arrived at the hospital around 7.45. I had texted the consultant en route. I was told to wait in the ER & was called after about 10 minutes. I was told to go to the induction ward- there was a bed for me there. I had a trace on admission but found it difficult to stay still. As a result I knew I'd have continuous monitoring but "I accept whatever path our birth takes."
On examination I was 6-7cm with bulging membranes-it was straight to the delivery suite. We had a fabulous midwife who actually induced me with my first dd. She was very calm, respectful & encouraging. The room was very peaceful. Lights off, curtains closed. My dh put the radio on & kept talking which was about to drive me mad! I needed silence. I stood, moved around, sat on the loo...the mw asked if I wanted to go into the pool but I decided against it. With each contraction my dh applied counter pressure which was fantastic. The consultant came in & I agreed to have another ve. I was 8cm. My waters released. I was surprised at the volume of fluid. There was barely a trickle when my waters were released on dd1.
The mw got the mat & I lay over the ball rocking each contraction. With each contraction I had the urge to push. I fell asleep between each one. I said I wanted to sleep & the mw encouraged me to follow my body. I tried laying down on the mat but could not get comfortable. I was comfortable over the ball so stayed there. Approx 1 hour later I was kneeling on the bed when the consultant came in. I was really running out of steam & I asked for help. My dh, mw & consultant were fantastic.
I found the last part exhausting, a bit frustrating & I found the pressure a bit overwhleming. There were a few expletives at this stage! They all really helped me to focus & with very gentle encouragement & support our dd2 was born 9th October at 1301. She was huge! We had immediate skin to skin, dcc & natural third stage. I had a good look at the placenta & cord, both were much bigger than with dd1. The mw asked if I wanted the placenta & I said yes please! I felt amazing! She lay on my chest for 1.5hr. She began rooting & latched on. We guessed her weight & the mw confirmed she was 7lb13oz. Well over 2 lbs heavier than my dd1. My dh had skin to skin while I had a lovely hot shower & we were taken up to our room with all our needless bags & baggage! I was on a high & suddenly starving! We were barely in the room when the nurse was filling out the discharge forms. I decided to wait 24hrs so dd2 would be seen by paeds etc & so we wouldn't have to return.
The following day my blood pressure was low so nurse encouraged lots of fluids & next time she checked it was perfect so we could go! I was thrilled to get home to our dd1 & we spent the next few days all cuddled up on the couch just the 4 of us. I loved the GentleBirth CDs & I loved the GentleBirth Workshop we did with Mary Tighe. She was a great support. Thank goodness for counter pressure!
