Sorry for the long birth story:
I have been telling myself to post this for so long but never got around to it. Now that the hustle and bustle of Christmas is all around I have been making a conscious effort to take a moment every now and again to just stop and reflect so today I finally share with you all my birth story. My guess date was the 13th of September it was a Sunday. And it came and went like any other day but I had prepared myself for that. It was the following Wednesday the 16th that I woke with cramping pains. Nothing intense and nothing regular but distinct pains. I got out my ball and decided to have a bounce while my oh made tea and put on my tens. I phoned my sister as I promised I would tell her straight away if anything was happening. She is the calming presence in my life. The day passed and the cramping became more regular but never getting anymore intense so we decided to go out for dinner, came home with goodies and a movie but I was exhausted so decided to try get some sleep. I woke up Thursday morning to nothing. No pain, no cramping it had all disappeared. It took all of my strength to stay positive because I was so disappointed.
The next few days I made myself super busy to help pass the time and keep my spirits up. I had my hair and nails done, I met friends for coffee and on Saturday night I decided to join two friends in our local late bar. I danced (wobbled) the night away and even had a virgin strawberry daiquiri to mark the occasion as it was the last drink I had before finding out I was pregnant. The same two lovely ladies were present for both occasions. I got McDonald’s to eat and we got home to bed at around 4am. I had pains in my face from laughing we had so much fun. I woke at 9am the following morning with the same distinct cramps I had felt on Wednesday so I just went about my day as normal. I watched some tv had a bath, I got oh to rub my shoulders with my love and labour oil and I bounced on my ball. By around 4pm the cramps were becoming more regular so I decided to get back in the bath and phone my sister. At 6pm I was in my third bath of the day with my best friend sitting on the toilet seat and my sister and oh were on the floor. We were dancing and. Laughing so hard it was so much fun. I got out of the bath around 8 and put the tens on. The tightening’s had a strange pattern every 5 minutes and then every 2 minutes. After 2 minutes it was a more intense tightening but was still very bearable. I took 2 paracetemol and sat on the ball. By 11pm I decided I should ring the midwife from the domino scheme and let her know what was happening. She said I was doing everything right and to stay home as long as I was comfortable. I hung up the phone and almost immediately had 3 strong surges one after the other. I knew if that happened another few times I may not be able to get in the car so I phoned the midwife again and said I would start making my way in. I changed my clothes gathered the bags and me and my oh set off to the hospital.

I had a few strong surges in the corridor of the hospital so I put the tens back on. I was examined in a and e at 20 past midnight and I was 3cm so they sent me straight to the delivery ward. I told the midwife I hoped to use the pool so we dropped all our stuff in one room and then walked to the pool room. It was blissful being in the water and I chatted to my midwife about studying nursing and about my sisters family. I spent almost 2 hours in the pool but it flew by it felt like 10 minutes. I got out of the pool and decided I would like to be examined to see where I was so we could get the room set up. I wanted to be involved. I was 6cm at this stage so decided to go back to the room. I had 3 strong surges on the corridor between the pool and my room. I put on the dress I had brought to birth in and decided to go to the bathroom. Sitting on the toilet gave me good relief too as the cold tiles on my back felt lovely. I was sitting over the toilet for about ten minutes when the urge to push started to get very strong. The midwife checked me again and 10cm so I decided to get back on the bed on all 4. For about 15 minutes everything became very intense and I kind of fell into my own bubble. I don’t remember much but I was told my groaning became very primal.

My waters broke at 5 minutes to 4am and 7 minutes layer my beautiful baby girl made her entrance to the world with her head of jet black hair and eyes wide open stating at me. She didn’t cry she just stared. I had immediate skin to skin, delayed cord clamping and she latched straight away. This was followed by the nicest cup of tea I ever drank. I was moved to the post natal ward at around 10 to 6am and I was discharged home at 12 noon. We stayed to register her birth as she was named after my dad and we wanted to give him the birth cert as a present. I still can’t believe what an incredible experience it was and I can’t thank Mary Tighe and everyone on the GentleBirth page for the support and advice in the lead up to her birth. For someone who suffers with terrible anxiety I never felt out of control. I doubted myself for a moment and my oh got me back in the zone almost immediately. Sitting here today looking at my beautiful baby girl and I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect than my little girl.
